We are delighted to team up with the Killarney National Park Education team to deliver a guided bat walk in Killarney. Meeting at Deenagh Lodge at 8:30pm on Saturday 24th August, we will explore the woodlands of Killarney National Park in search of our many bat species. We will learn about the habitats that support Irish bat species, potential impacts that affect them, and the ecology of our bats. This event is free, and supported by Creative Ireland and Kerry County Council Arts.

The Biosphere area is home to nine bat species, many of which occur in the broadleaf woodlands of the National Park. Species such as Leisler's Bat emerge from roost sites early in the evening, often before sundown and can be mistaken for swifts. The Leislers Bat often use 'aerial hawking' hunting methods whereby they catch prey items in mid-flight. This species sometimes flies at considerable height and swoops down on prey from above, similar to a Peregrine Falcon. Other impressive species that occur in the locailty include the rare Lesser Horseshoe Bat, a species synonymous with mature hedgerows and treelines, and associated broadleaved woodlands. We will be using bat detectors and visual sightings to record and possibly view the bat species. Join us on the night for more information on the ecology and behaviour of our bat species.
